Respiratory Function Grading Scheme

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), a condition that may cause breathing difficulties in short-nosed breeds (English Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs).

BOAS is caused by tissues in the upper airway restricting the airflow causing them to have difficulties with exercise, heat, play eating and even sleeping. Many owners are unaware of this condition and often interpret breathing noises or difficulties as simply "normal" for the breed.

The results of this examination are important to understanding individual respiratory health, offering breeding best practices advice, and suggesting which patients might benefit from corrective airway surgery. We are partnered with IPATA to certify brachycephalic breeds as a fit to fly when they might otherwise be denied from airlines.

Dr. Matt Wittenrich of the CKC Brachycephalic Breeds Advocacy Committee is pleased to provide this OFA-Certified test to our existing clients and new patients.
